Super Mario RPG – How to Take On the New Boss Rematches

After nearly three decades, the classic Super Mario RPG is back and as quirky as ever. This one-of-a-kind take on both the Super Mario universe and RPG genre is packed with unique mechanics, secrets, and puzzles that may be a bit perplexing for new players at first, but we’re here to help you.

Warning: The following article contains some SPOILERS for Super Mario RPG.

One of the features of the new Super Mario RPG is the ability to tackle some of the game’s key bosses in much more difficult forms, but how exactly do you gain access to these new challenges? It isn’t quite as intuitive as you might expect, but don’t worry, here’s how you do it…

  • Step 1 – First, you’ll have to have completed Super Mario RPG and rolled credits. At which point, you can save your cleared data. If you load up this saved data, you’ll return to before the climax of the game and can now track down the boss rematches.
  • Step 2 – Go to the Marrymore Inn and talk to the Toad at the front desk. You’ll now have a voucher for a free stay in the honeymoon suite. Head up and go to sleep. During the Night, Geno will look out the window and notice a new light at Star Hill.
  • Step 3 – Head to Star Hill. Go to the second area and interact with one of the new pink stars.
  • Step 4 – Head to Tadpole Pond and speak to the Frog Sage. He’ll make mention that Belome is making trouble again. Note – If you haven’t defeated the optional boss Jinx from Monstro Town yet, you’ll have to do that first.
  • Step 5 – Go back to Belome Temple via Monstro Town and fight Belome again.
  • Step 6 – From this point on, every time you complete a boss rematch, the Frog Sage will tell you who you can take on next. The other rematches are Punchinello (Mole Mines), Booster (Booster Tower), Bundt & Raspberry (Marrymore), Johathan Jones (Sunken Ship), and 3D Culex (Monstro Town).
  • Note – You’ll need to have beaten the original version of the optional boss Culex before you can fight Jonathan Jones and Culex again. Here’s how unlock the Culex battle.

And there you have it! That’s what you need to do to tackle the boss rematches. Make no mistake, these bosses are pretty darn tough, but with persistence (and level grinding) you can deal with them.
