Titanfall Game Reportedly in Development at Respawn, Though It Won’t Be a Sequel

Respawn Entertainment’s debut IP was Titanfall. The success of that franchise led Electronic Arts to purchase Respawn in November 2017. However, the only new game released in that universe after the acquisition is the Battle Royale Apex Legends, which is obviously quite far from Titanfall’s original target audience.

Last year, EA canceled Titanfall Legends, which would have been another single player installment in the franchise. That doesn’t mean it’s over, though. Just a few days ago, the publisher announced it is pivoting away from licensed IP and canceled a Star Wars first-person shooter in development at Respawn.

While the studio will still make the third game in the Star Wars Jedi trilogy, EA clearly means to leverage its owned IPs to a greater degree in the future to offset the rising costs of game development. Does this mean Titanfall 3 is coming? After all, Respawn founder Vince Zampella said he’d love to do it at the right time.

According to insider Jeff Grubb, the studio is indeed making a new Titanfall game, but it won’t be a sequel.

They’re not making Titanfall 3. They just straight up aren’t. They do have another team that has been kicking around a project that is very early. There’s been a very small team in the prototyping phase and now they’re going to go to wider. This is a real project now, but still in the prototyping phase. This game, as it stands today, as far as I understand, is a Titanfall game. It’s in the Titanfall universe. But everyone I talk to keeps saying, don’t get in your mind that it’s Titanfall 3, a game with online multiplayer and a single player campaign.

Whatever it’s going to be, it’ll likely take a few years to emerge from the prototype phase, provided it isn’t canceled first. Still, we’ll be here reporting on any further rumors and news.
